Derek Sheils successful Superbike run continued today with
his win in the Grand Final "Race of the South" at Walderstown on the Cookstown Burrows Engineering GSXR
1000. 2nd place went to local favourite Derek McGee with Ballymoney
man William Dunlop in 3rd. Sheils stormed into the lead from the off
and built up a commanding lead, leaving McGee and Dunlop to fight it out as
they reeled in the back markers towards the end of the 8 lap race. In doing so, Derek picked up the Austin "Specials" Donoghue memorial cup, sponsored by his family.
In the Supersport race, newcomer Adam McClean blew away the opposition
with a win from Dunlop and Paul Jordan. While having a tremendous season, all
eyes were on the usual suspects to fill the podium but, this wasn’t to be.
McClean, Dunlop and Paul Jordan broke free from the chasing pack and never
looked back.
The Open race went the way of Derek McGee beating William
Dunlop into 2nd as Michael Sweeney finished 3rd. Sheils
led for most of the race but, McGee spotted a gap into turn 1 and made it
stick. A small error by Sheils braking into the same corner a lap later allowed
Dunlop and Sweeney through to complete the podium, although Sheils rode
brilliantly to come home in 4th.
Other racing headlines today were made by Joey Loughlin taking
wins in Senior Support and Supertwins, breaking lap records along the way and
so earning “Man of the Meeting 2017”.
